Bob WilsonWATERLOO — The Black Hawk County Medical Examiner and a Waterloo pathologist were still conducting an autopsy Thursday at press time trying to determine certain facts about an infant which was found in a ditch near Dunkerton Wednesday afternoon by Black Hawk Sheriff deputiesThe sheriff’s department reported Thursday at a morning press conference they received a call from what they called a private agency, telling officials they had received a report from an individual that she had given birth to a baby and had disposed of its body near DunkertonAuthorities then went to the agency and talked to the individual, receiving details about the location of the body. Officers then went to a county gravel road two miles south of Dunkerton and searched the snow-covered ground looking for the baby.After several hours of searching, they reportedly found the infant “slightly covered in the words of one of the officers. It wasn't indicated whether the body was clothed or covered with a blanket or not. but the sheriff said it appeared from initial investigation the body had been there for about a week.The body was then taken to the St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo for the autopsy. Sheriffs spokesmen said the autopsy was to determine if the baby had been stillborn or if it had died after being born alive.Officials hadn't released the names of any of the people involved as of Thursday morning, and apparently hadn’t taken any action regarding charges. No reason was given as to why the baby, if stillborn, had been left in the ditch.
