Fur Sammons, Noted Gunman, Placed in/ ‘ . , Indiana PenitentiaryMICHIGAN CITY, Ind., Dec. 1.— (2P)—James (Fur) Sammons, notorious gunman and robber named, in a dozen spectacular . crimes, today* became number 16-458 in the Indiana state penitentiary.Sentenced as an habitual criminal, Sammons must spend the rest of his life behind bars unless freed by pardon, parole or a new trial. Prosecutors who obtained his conviction on a charge of attempting to bribe a small town deputy sheriff said they would vigorously oppose any such action.Although Sammons disclaimed any intention to create trouble, he was brought secretly and with three au-tomobile loads of police and deputies on guard, to the prison from the county jail at Crown Point, Ind., where sentence was passed lastnight.Declaring he wrould be a model prisoner, Sammons shaved liis mustache before leaving the county jail. .Upon entering the prison, his fingerprints and measurements were taken, his head shaved, and he was taken to the infirmary to spend two weeks under medical observation.
