The case was haul fought from begiuni g to end aud every p nut was hotly contested The State’s theory was to prove her case by introducing letters written by the defendant to the girl in question during courtship in corroboration of a promise of marriage. These letters did not reveal a certain promise of marriage, aud the defense took advantage of the defectivenes to show to the jury there whs no promise. It is a close point and hard to settle. The testimony of Miss Butler relative to a promise of marriage must he corroborated to the extent required to convict principal witnesses in cases of perjury. Her character was alsobroaght into question by the defenseThe argument for the prosecution was made by Prosecutor Steele, Frank K. Beach ahd Judge M. E. Forkner The defense was made by Enoch A. Nation, (1. H. Beard, of this city, and Judge McKee, of Connersville. It is the most important case that has been in the Henry Circuit court for a long tune. The case went to the jury about JJ o’clock this afternoon.LATEK.The jury in the above ise, after deliberating seventeen hours, returned a verdict of guilty at. 10 o’clock this morning. Under the new law this means an indeterminate sentence of one to five years in the Reformatory, at Jeffersonville. A motion for a new trial will be made, aud the case will probably be taken to the Supreme Court. To us it seams that the case should have been compromised through marriage, as it. is reported that both parties, if left to exercise their own wishes, would gladly consent to this.THE BASTARDY SUIT.The Inn tardy proceadings of Nellie Butler vs. Earl Manlove. opened in ’Squire Leach’s court, this afternoon. The defendant, iu charge of the Sheriff, of Henry county, and his attorney, D. W. McKee, Miss Butler and her attorney, Frank Beach, arrived bete from New Castle, this morning, ami are in attendance at court.A techuicallity arose during the proceedings regarding the affidavit which holds Muniove under bond, and winch both counsels allege to be defective, hh it lacks the proper certificate from the clerk of the Henry county court. The legal point callel out lengthly arguments, and Attorney McKee’s motion to dismiss still hangs tire.anaitwoIcl a; nut tior giv. stH£ cur wur thrlt; CellUIICTIC flu MIDI/CT CTDCCTIWillholiaftc21stholiappw...
