EURTT'S CRIME.An Assault Upon an Eight*Year»Okl Girl That Is Answerable by Life Imprisonment.An outrage that may land Ed. S. Hurtt inthe penitentiary for life was unearthed last night, and the accused was landed behiud the oars at Oliver Street Station.It appears that*~Hurtt, a peddler, thirty-nine years of age, and giving his residence at 4 Riddle street, induced Josephine Menxer, a child, of eight years, to accompany him to a hay-loft at the corner of Riddle and Gardner streets, and while there abused her. Wheu she returned to her home, at 6 Riddle street, her parents upbraided her with soiling her Sunday clothes, and In her Innocence she said that Hurtt had been the cause of her misfortune. Closer inquiry developed the Tactthat her misfortune was of a much graver character than soiled clothlug. Dr. Stanton was called In, and after careful reflection and diagnosis of the case, announced that the child was severely and probably danger, ousiy Injured. A warrant was at ouce sworn out by the father, and Officers Durst aud Rluger started in pursuit of their mau. He was found at his room at 4 Riddle street, and was locked up at the Oliver Street Police Station at 11:46. He refuses to talk of the gruvo charge that appears against his name. The friends and neighbors of the child w’ere greatly incensed at the miserable crime aod talked of summary vengeance. Henry Menzer, the father of the girl, is a cooper. He has long been a resident of this city, and his many friends promise substantial support In the prosecutlou or Hurtt.
