Hess in Plainfield, is said to have run a cargo of hooch from St. Paul to Green Sunday, was almost captured by John Morehouse Greene policeman, Monday night,— all, maybe, for a little excitement. Mayo, 22, is at large either in Ipwa or Minnesota.A licenses to marry was issued by I. H. Sclnvake Saturday afternoon. The man was accompanied by a girl who gave her name as Clara Zimmerman, IS, of this city. A witness could not be procured here so Pat Patterson of Charles City signed the affadavit. Rev. Hess of Plainfield was routed out of bed in the middle 3f the night to make the two one.Information from Greene Wednesday. afternoon states that Mayo had emptied his gun on the sheriff at Albert Lea, Minn,, a few days ago. Dry agents at Austin, Minn., chased aim to St. Paul, but lost him after he reached the city. John Morehouse, marshall at. Greene, received word to be on the watch for him, as it was thought he was headed for that place with booze to be sold during the Legion carnival..Morehouse grabbed Mayo, but a helper let him get away on the opposite side of the car. Two shots wore fired at him. The new car, however, was held. It bore a Black-hawk county license plate. The Waterloo Motor company held a mortgage on the ear.' Miss Clara Zimmerman has been working for some elderly people in this city, according to Marshal Morehouse, She returned here Monday night, it was stated. No one could be 'found here who knows the girl or the people lor whom she was supposed to be working. Mayo was noticeably nervous when the licenses was procured.A warrant for Mayo’s arrest is in •the bands of federal officials in Austin.—Wavory, Independent Republican.
