Aur 29~One of Win- throp’s most celebrated summer resi-i dents achieved new fame last Friday 1 night. 8he cake-walked with Harry I Lehr.The press agent who allowed this se~I cret to escape did not say whether I Harry Lehr is a good cake-walker or J not. He added Lispenard Stewart and I other celebrities of Newport to the listof those who cake-walked, but nobody really counts in society except Harry Lehr.Not even the beasts with which Mrs Stuyvesant Fish has enlivened her entertainments have achieved the luster Mr Lehr has won by showing the Newport people how to be surprising to themselves—this being no mean feat.Mrs Fish gave a supper Friday night to 90 people at her “cottage” with a ballroom in it—the Crossways. For the I entertainment of her guests she en- ] i gaged “La Petite Adelaide,” a dancer nationally known to theatre-goers.She is a pocket edition, bound with a limp back in peau de sole. She has danced in public ever since she was 10 years old, and she is now just 21.When Mrs Fish’s guests had supped, and the carriages bringing the reat of her 200 guests of the evening were rolling up for the dance at 11 o’clock Friday night, space was. cleared for “LaPetite Adelaide.” and -she danced. She whirled admiration and even a touch of animation into the faces of those guests, and when she went down to her dressing room, Mrs Fish sent to ask it she would not dance once more—and I might it be a cake walk? I“La Petite Adelaide” returned to the ball room and cake-walked, bidding with J a mischievous eye for a partner. Harry ILehr was out with a bounce, and the I example caught. In a moment all those rich, blase Newporters were prancing round Mrs Fish’s cottage in a wild cake j walk, to the amazement of the just-arriving late comers.It lasted until somebody dropped in sheer exhaustion. Then that one laughed at the spectacle of the rest, and they all stopped. “La Petite Adelaide” came home, well pleased. I
