A MAINE BANK LOOTED.Cracksmen Terrorize the Inhabitantsof a Town.BANGOR, Me., Aug. 29.—The Brewer Savings Bank, situated in Brewer, just across the river from this place, was broken into by burglars at an early hour this morning. After securing the money from the vault, the robbers fled. They obtained but $300. as the Brewer Bank had deposited most of its money with a Bangorinstitution for greater safety. The burglars worked nearly a half hour, firing three or four charges, the last at 1:57 A. M., before gaining entrance to the vault. During this time a number of Brewer people, who were aroused by the first explosion, watched the men from across the street, making no attempt to molest them, because of their guns. One man who shouted was deliberately firedupon. When the robbers left the bank they retreated under cover of their guns, firing a dozen shots. They also exchanged fire with Bangor policemen who tried to intercept them as they crossed the bridge to this city, but apparently no one was hit.The entire police force of Bangor, assisted by the Sheriff of Penobscot County, witha force of deputies, at once started in pursuit, armed with rifles and revolvers The forenoon passed without encounter between the searchers and the robbers, but infor-mation was received that four men had been seen driving furiously from Bangor toward Hampden early in the day. Theinformation came from theployed at Lowell Engel s Mill, in EastHampden. The watchman knew nothingof the bank robbery at the time, but he supposed that the men were horse thieves, and later he reported tfeev.matter to theP°ItCwas rumored this afternoon that the robbers were dodging the Sheriffs posse in the woods beyond Bangor, but the reporthas not as yet been confirmed It is believed that the cracksmen were not experts, though a kit of burglars tools was found in the railroad yard throughwhich thev fled.
