BY KELLTIAWGEVWRoof Vandals Cost $Vandalism on school rooftops is going through the roof and the Interlake School Board wants a ceiling put on the repair costs.At the school board meeting Aug. 22, building operations supervisor Pat Lennox gave a list of schools in Stonewall, Warren and Teuton damaged by vandalism over the summer months.Much of the vandalism has occurred on school roofs, and will cost the Interlake School Division thousands of dollars in repair bills.At Centennial School a natural gas exhaust chimney was pushed over and had to be replaced. Cost of the damage has been estimated at $3,800.Roof vents and at Stonewall Collegiate and Stonewall Centennial were plugged with bottles and stones which had to be removed.Teulon Collegiate had a three-year-old chimney crushed by roof-top vandals. The new chimney had to be replaced at a cost of $2,500.“This is adding up to a lot of money,” said School Board Chairperson Emmy Byle.Lennox said most of the vandalism to schools occurs just before graduation and just beforeBoard Briefsschool begins at the end of August.Stonewall Collegiate has also been the victim of a number of other vandal attacks this year.Someone presumably trying to break into a storage shed at the north end of the school ground rammed a car into the garage door several times. The door of the shed had to be replaced.The sign at the main entrance to the school had to be repaired and replaced.The southwest doors at the collegiate have been vandalized three times. Some windows and screens and exterior light fixtures have been vandalized.Trustees discusscd a number of methods to keep vandals from climbing on top of the school roofs.A fence was installed on top of Stony Mountain School at an area where kids reportedly were climbing up. The fence was tom down by vandals.Greasing natural gas fixtures or drain pipes was suggested to keepvandals from climbing onto the roof, however, if a youngster was injured by slipping off the fixture the Board may be held liable.Chairman Byle suggested Lennox look into installing motion detector lights on top of the roof to illuminate areas on the roof where kids have been climbing.Not out for lunchThe phrase ‘Stay in School’ may have a different connotation for some Warren Collegiate students this year.At the June 27 Interlake School Board meeting WCI neighbor Bob Malanchuk approached the board asking for something to be done about youngsters roaming thestreets of Warren during lunch hours getting into mischief.A small group of freshmen students who are bused into Warren and spend their lunch hours around town have been causing minor vandalism and have been seen climbing on the roof top of the Warren Recreation Centre.Trustee David Fairlie said the school can’t have teachers walking around town policing the community during lunch hours.“Teachers are not police officers,” added trustee Bill Hutchinson.Trustee Fran Frederickson,Continued on page 9
