(AP) — Gunfire erupted today in the city jail where inmates were holding three guards hostage and two prisoners were killed and a guard was wounded, officials said. All three guards later emerged from the second-floor lockup. The wounded guard walked without assistance and the other two were unharmed.Police Lt. J.O. Smith said some ofthe 84 inmates had apparently turned against their ringleaders. “They (the dissidents) are in charge now,” he said.“They didn’t like all of them (the police responses), but they’re conceding the ones they don’t like,” he said. The points that were denied included demands for better representation by public defenders, improved facilities for Sunday religious services and radios in everycell. The prisoners had demanded better medical care, access to court records and an exercise area. They also complained about cold food and lukewarm showers, and sought better laundry service, complainingpoorly-done laundry “makes us look even worse when we go to court and confront the judge.”Earlier today, the prisoners issued a demand that their terms and the police reaction to them be published in a local newspaper.Smith said while the department has agreed in principle to release the information, “that’s still one of the items we’re negotiating.”But the inmates refused to release their hostages until details of the agreement were made public. In response to the first set of 10 demands, authorities tried to alleviate problems, police said. Butthe inmates expressed completesatisfaction only with pledges for improved dental care and increased access to telephones. At least five of the 84 inmates in the second-floor lockup were involved in negotiations, said police Capt. Dan Stopka.Stopka identified the two chief inmate spokesmen as Felix Lorenzo, 28, and Patrick McKenna, 31, also known as Charles Allen James.Lorenzo is serving a 160-year term for several crimes, including an incident last year at a Las Vegas bar in which he held eight persons for five hours before surrendering to police.McKenna, who faces sentencing on a murder conviction, is serving a 15-year sentence for robbery and kidnap. The other prisoners named by police were Eugene Shaw, 40; Michael Mize, 22, and Gary Wayne Collura, 28. Shaw and Coilura face prison sentences and Mize is charged with attempted murder.Police said Lorenzo, McKenna and Shaw were believed armed, presumably with the guards’ three 9mm pistols. Lorenzo and McKenna reportedly were wearing the guards’uniforms. The prison complex, within sight ofthe downtown casino area kno wn as Glitter Gulch, is designed for a? * m any as 114 prisoners. The incident began shortly alter 9 a.m. Saturday, when a gu ard was overpowered by a group of prisoners who then apparently u sed that guard’s service revolver f ,o capturetwo others. The guards were id' »ntified by authorities as William Nelton, 52.
