Quarrel Over Boy’s Lack of Manners Leads to Fatal Shooting at Pacific, Mo.IPACIFIC, Mo., Aug. 27.—(U. P.)-i-IA sixteen-year-old boy was held here today for the murder of Lafe Jett, 23, in a quarrel over the boy’s lack of manners in flickering a schoolgirl on the back with a dampened handkerchief.Acording to witnesses, the quarrel | originated several days ago when the I boy, Chester Lynch, son of a construe-I tion gang laborer, was admonished for | teasing an unnamed girl by snapping the handkerchief at her and otherwise [ tormenting her.! The boy, who is five feet five inches tall and weighs but 140 pounds had been bested in a fist fight with the six foot young man earlier yesterday evening.The youngster appeared with a shotgun in front of the railroad station in the village and leveling the weapon at Jett engaged him in another argument.Will Rowden, witnes to the fatal argument, said he heard nothing of the conversation betwen the two until the boy said, “if you take another step I’ll kill you.”Turning in alarm to get a policeman, Rowden heard the shot fired and saw Jett fall to the ground.The boy returned home calmly carrying the gun under his arm.When the officers went for him a half hour later, a phonograph within the house was grinding out a jazz tune. Chester and his father, Alonzo Lynch, met the officers at the door.Chester refuscUrio comment on the shooting and brazenly warned the officers to “take good care of the gun; I wouldn’t take a fortune for it.”“I’m brave,” he boasted. “I fight with open hands. There’s no need to search me for weapons.”A shell found near the scene of the shooting was of the same calibre as the gun turned over to police.Early today the youth was removed to the county jail at TJnion, Mo., his parents accompanying him.
