Aug. 23.-Eight operators of a Terre Haute gambling syndicate were indicted 1 by a federal grand jury today on five counts of conspiracy and federal excise tax evasion.The indictments were returned before the grand jury completed hearing testimony from more than 160 witnesses in the investigation, now in its third week.+ + +NAMED in the indictments were Leo Shaffer and Jules Horwick, both of Chicago: Philip Share, Minneapolis, Minn., and Las Vegas, Nev.; Irwin Gordon. Las Vegas: Joseph Jacobson. Indianapolis: Charles L. “Buck Sumner. Indianapolis, former Marion County sheriff; James Tamer, Miami. Fla., and E. M. Wyatt, Terre Haute.Bond was set at $10,000 each. U. S. District Attorney Don A. Tob-bert said Tamer and Wyatt hod not yet been taken into custody but that he anticipated no difficulty in finding them.+ + -h EARLIER a conflict in statements by Mayor Ralph Tucker of Terre Haute and his police chief, Frank Riddle, developed when newsmen questioned Riddle.Tucker told reporters last week he had asked Riddle to investigate this operation above the restaurant and had received a report on it from Riddle.But the police chief said Monday he had never been in the syndicate headquarters and neither had any member of his force, as far as he knew.After talking to newsman. Riddle spent 45 minutes with the grand jury and later repeated his statement that neither he nor any of his men has visited the place. He added that Tucker had given him a tip about it but refused to say what he had dene about the tip.+ 4- 4-OPERATORS of the syndicate, which ran for 10 weeks last Fall before U. S. Treasury agents broke it up in a raid Nov, 29, were charged with evading $326,315 in the 10 per cent federal excise tax on gross wagering receipts of $3,-263,150.One count charged the eight with conspiracy to evade the tax.
