War'd and other old friends who little thought of the grim tragedy that a.few short weeks would evolve.In regard to the shooting, the Examiner says:. LOS ANGELES, August 20.—. Sheriff B. • McMartin. of Ventura County was shot and instantly killed today and Uader-Sheriff William E. Kellyj yentura, fatally wounded by a man - they attempted to arr^Bt at Owensmouth, Los Angeles County. The shooting occurred at no Kelly died at 2:30 p. m., shortly ter he was brought to the receiving hospital here. The man . who shot them was shot and killed in a battlewith pursurers.. ■McMartin and Kelly came to Owensmouth this morning looking for two men who were said to have• * tbeen concerned in a fatal shooting affray at Oxnard, Ventura County, about a week ago. They came upon one of the.suspects about noon and be opened fire when they attempted to arrest him.Sheriff McMartin was instantlykilted, according to the announce-*%ment here, and Kelly- fell with a bul-let In his chest. The fugitive escaped but was closely followed by a posse headed by Constable Thomas Murray of Owensmouth.VAn hour after the shooting the man was surrounded in a cornfield a short distance from Owensmouth. As Murray approached him he fired at the constable, and then was killed himself, it was stated.It was later stated the body of the man who shot McMartin and Kelly had been identified as Juan Duran-do, a Mexican.Coroner Nance left for Owensmouth, at 2 o’clock to take charge of the bodies.A posse of Los Angeles policemen was on the way to Owensmouth, which is about thirty-five miles west of here, when the fugitive was shot. Another posse started from Ventura uptn receiving the first report. of the shooting. .Sheriff E. L. McMartin, was f-rsi elected sheriff of Ventura County in 1902 and pined continuously since that time. I to was about 60 yo.us old, and was a native of Canada, his parents slt;tiling in Mer.dotvno County.McMartin came to Ventura County in 1880 and became a rancher which pursuit lie followed until his election as sheriff. He is survived by a son and three daughters. .Under-Sherrif William E, K6)ly, also killed in the Owensmouth affray was formerly city marshal of Oxnard.
