Five volunteer firefighters hurt while battling Louisville fireLOUISVILLE (AP) — Five Highview Volunteer firefighters were injured, two critically, while battling a house fire in southern Jefferson County, authorities said.Listed in critical condition at University of Louisville Hospital this morning were Craig Drury, 24, and Keith Recktenwald, 25, both of Louisville. Jefferson County Police spokeswoman Wendy Peters said both suffered second degree face and neck bums, plus upper respiratory tract injuries.Drury, the son of Highview Fire Chief Ted Drury, is a seven year veteran of the department and Recktenwald has been with the department four years.Treated at the same hospital for minor burns and released were Tom Snyder, 28; his father, Fred Snyder, 59, and Pat Conn, 29. All listed Louisville addresses.The firefighters were injuredWednesday night when they encountered a “flashover” — when everything in a room gets so hot it ignites at once, Okolona Fire Department Chief Rich Carlson said.“There’s very little you can do right there and then because of the quickness that it happens,” Carlson said. Peters said the fire was of “suspicious” origin and arson investigators were on the scene.The injured firefighters were taken to the hospital by helicopter.The one-stoiy wood-frame homenear the Bullitt County line wasdestroyed, authorities said. The family was not at home when the fire broke out but returned lateWednesday night. They planned to stay with a relative.The house is in a rural area, with the nearest neighbor several hundred yards away, authorities said.
