His wife stood by his side to assist him. Awed by the situation the mob retired to the rear of the jail aud with sledge hammers, the outside door was soon broken open. After much difficulty the locks of the cell doors were broken by the heavy blows of sledge hammers. At 3 o’clock the cells were opened and Reynolds was found cowering and shrinking in a corner. He had been quite sick and was unable to stand. Jle was carried about half a mile northwest of town to a bridge which crosses a small stream. Here a rope was placed around his neck and he was swung off the bridge at 3:15 a. m.. just as the Kansas City train on the C. B. Q., was passing south. Reynolds refused to make any statement, though giyen an opportunity to do so. As soon as he was dead several shots were fired to call iu the pickets, and soon after the company marched out of town like well drilled soldiers on dress parade. Reynolds admitted that the name he hud given was fictitious. He left no clue by which his identity may be established. He claimed to be a British subject, and through his attorney, Hon. N. B. Bullock, appealed to the protection of the British Consul at Chicago. Last Saturday a letter was received from the consul asking for the prisoner’s true name and all the facts of the case. At 9 o’clock Sunday morning the body was taken charge of byCoronor Gardner.
