Motorist charged with driving into crowd faces murder rapA Ford Heights man accused of ramming his car into a group of pedestrians early Saturday morning in Chicago Heights, killing one woman and injuring three others, was charged with murder Monday.Enoch Hasslett, 25, of 971 E. 15th St., was charged with the murder of Kim Fulton, 19, 334 Concord Dr., Chicago Heights.Hasslett was held on $200,000 bond.He is expected to be arraigned later this week.Hasslett surrendered to Ford Heights police Saturday morning after he set his automobile on fire in Gary, Ind., police said. “He said he burned the vehicle because he knew that the Chicago Heights police were looking for his tan-colored Mercury Cougar,” said Capt. Richard Stultz, Chicago Heights police spokesman.After Hasslett turned himself in, Ford Heights police held him in custody until Chicago Heights Sgt.Dwight Lockwood, head of the department’s traffic investigations unit, picked him up later Saturday morning.Fulton was among a group of people who gathered on the parkway in the 300 block of Concord to watch a fight at approximately 2:04 a.m. Saturday, according to police.Police reports indicate the fight started after the brother of one of the victims did not like the way his sister had been treated by Hasslett and a male passenger in Hasslett’s car. Earlier in the evening, three of the victims had accepted a ride in the offender’s car, police said.Stultz said Hasslett argued with three other men during the brawl. The three men had objected when Hasslett allegedly pushed another girl from his vehicle while it was still moving.Police reports indicate that Hasslett argued for several minutes, thendrove away from the scene. But he turned his car around and allegedly aimed for the women as they stood on the parkway. After striking the victims, Hasslett allegedly backed up and sped away.Injured in the incident were: Tonya Johnson, 20, 530 Fifth Ave., Chicago Heights; Tameika Johnson, 15,466 W. Hickory St., Chicago Heights; and Ta-mika Porter, 14,424 Concord Dr., Chicago Heights.' Porter and Tameika Johnson were treated and released at St. James Hospital Medical Center in Chicago Heights. Tonya Johnson sustained a broken right knee and fractures to her lower right arm. She was hospitalized over the weekend, police said.At the scene, police found Fulton lying face up on the sidewalk in front of 330 Concord with a broken leg. She was unconscious. Fulton was rushed to St. James Hospital and was later pronounced dead.
