atlt;»Much Cry, Little Wool.A blood curdling story reached town Tuesday, by telephone and grapevine trom Toto, to tbe effect that Bert Kirkbam of that place had j a•beaten his wifeMonday evening aeri- n oualy and probably fatally.Prosecutor Kelley and Deputy Sheriff Horner went to Toto Tuesday afternoon and spent several bours A n vestigating the matter, which proved to be greatly exaggerated.A year or two ago Bert Kirkbam, j v then a widower, married t b e ( u daughter of John Masterson and wife, a girl jf fifteen years. They ^ appear to have quarreled most of the ^ time since their marriage. Monday ^ evening when Kirkbam came home from work they bad a disturbance. Kirkbam claims the woman—or girl, tor she is now only a little more than , sixteen years old—started in by assaulting him with a club aud kick-ing him, being angered because he had eaten dinner at a neighbor's where his little daughter by bis former wife stays. He admits that be “squeezed her pretty hard when ahe assualted him, but did not injure feer otherwise. The girl is ill n bed, ie apparently suffering from a mi scar-! it liaga, but whether it was caused by C an assualt by Kirkbam is not known.She refused to talk anything like freely to tbe officers, and all they eould learn was from Kirkhatn's atory and tbe gossip of neighbors.No arrest was made and tbe matter is being allowed to rest until the result of Mrs. Kirkbam's illness is known.Kirkbam is the man who was found unconscious on the stone road sear tbe creatnerv several mouths ago from aome mysterious cause, after he bad caused a noisy dis j turbance at John Masterson's house. ;He and bis wife have lived for some U time in part of the old store building Gf.bwf.hF11osiClC;dutialniton the south side of the road at Toto, amid the most squalid surroundings.
