SAD DOUBLE DROWNINGMisses Ida and Pauline Metznqr were drowfled last Evening while returning from a Pleasure Party tip the River. The people in town were throwninto excitement last night abouthalf-past ten o’clock by telephonecall from “Lazycroft” for help thatsome people were drowning or had been drowned. The Bevere 9torm for the half bour preceedlog had blown down trees, broken telephone wires, etc., which greatly retarded spreading the news and getting together helpers, but in a comparatively short time about seventy-five willing hands were doing everything possible. An evening picnic party composed of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hubbard, MlB9es Pauline and Ida Metzuer and Charley Nelson, who were to have been Joined by other young people, but who failed on account of theraltt, had gone up the river for an evening picnic and to Ret ready for the remainder of the party when tbestorm struck them. After the wor9t of the storm had passed the party got into their boats and started down stream for the boat landing Just above the dam.On turning the bend Iti the river they encountered a strong wind and rough water and owlug to the timidity of some of the party concluded to land at or near the ledges on the north side of the river and walk down. After landing safely Charley Nelson concluded to take tbe boats down alone but Paulina Meaner Insisted that she accompany him and let her two sisters and Mr. Hubbard walk down, in her attempting to get into tbe boat it was accidently overturned, throwing her and Charley into the water. At this place the water is very deep but they succeeded In keeping their beads above water and getting up to thesteep ledge# but 6¥ery time they would get hold of tbe rocks they would give way and let them backwards into the water. In attempting to aid them Ida fell head first Into the water from the top of the ledge and before hlp could be procured tbe two young ladle9 were drowned and Charley, by chance, caught bold of a bush and saved himself In an etbaust-ed condition after the young ladies had gone down for tbe last time and he was unable to render them farther assistance.Help was booh obtained from tbe Sterns—Russell—Pinney cottages and from other campers and search for the bodi09 began at once and in a comparatively short time lda’9 body was recovered and every effort possible made to revive her and Dr. Doan was-soon ou the spot to conduct thee (Torts, but all to no avail. Pauline’s body was not recovered for nearly two hours,The condition and feelings of the mother of tbe young ladles can scarcely be Imagined and while the family have the unbounded sympathy of the entire community tbe shock to them is almost unbearable. Gloom and sorrow Is apparent on every face and everywhere and especially at the post office where Pauline has been one of theleQlclent and accomodating clerks during the time that J. W. Foster has been our postmaster. At the time of going to press no-arrangements have been made In regard to time and place of holding the funeral, which will be announced later upon tbe arrival of some of the-near relatives.T
