(.flP)—Two men who met in the center of town by tryst1 to fight a duel with shotguns were dead today as the culmination of a father's objection to a married man’s purported attentions to hisdaughter. . ' ,The duel, witnessed by a gathering ' of townspeople, marked the end of , months of enmity between Pate Huddleston, 53, and Marcus Brown, 42, both farmers. The trouble between them was climaxed by the second alleged elopment of Brown, who was the father of eight children, with Huddleston's daughter.The father sent a message to B'rown warning him to desist in his attentions to his daughter. Brown, infuriated by the message, was said by police to have challenged the father I to meet him at a store on the town’s I principal street yesterday afternoon.The townspeople heard of the chal* I lenge^ and a crowd of men had gath-1 ered, with hope of preventing the duel. , IHuddleston already had arrived and I was seated in front of the store with I a shotgun on his lap* when Brown I came up, also carrying a shotgun. I Brown walked past Huddleston, and I the latter followed him into the store. I Brown stopped in the store and Huddleston went through the back way I and around to the front where he re-1 occupied, his seat. IBrown walked out, turning as if to L pass down the street, but suddenly I he wheeled, firing the load of one bar-1 rel into Huddleston’s stomach. Hud-1 dleston, fatally wounded, fired from I his lap, the charge taking effect in Browns chest causing instant death. The gun’s recoil knocked Huddleston I to the sidewalk. He died a few hours I later. JOfficers said Brown had served three months on a ehaingang for an elopment with Huddleston’s daughter.
