W. R. Thaxton. of Jackson, recently lost bis gin bouse by tire. Enemies insinuated that lie bad burned tbe building to recover the insurance money. Mr. Thaxton was a deacon of the Baptist Church, and a committee of tbar body was appointed to investigate the affair. They bad scarcely commenced their work before toe church, and tb** whole community as we!J, wore shocked beyond measure by ii report of h most startling na:ure. It was to the effect that a negro woman bad given birth to a mulatto child and that its lather was no less a person than the Rev. Alexander Atkinson, the pastor of Mr. Thaxton’s church. Mr. Atuin-son bitterly denounced the report as a piece of vile and malicious slander, and that it was without a semblance of truth to sustain It. Tbe committee appointed to look Into the charges against Mr. Thaxton, tbe deacon, was further empowered to report upon tbe truth or fallacy of the allegations against Mr. Atkinson, the pastor. A day or two ago servioes were held in tbe Baptist church, the occasion being a regular conference of the church. Mr. Atkinson preached. After the services and before tbe congregation had dispersed, Mr. Arthur Atkinson, son of the pastor, met Mr. Thaxton as the latter came out of the church. and immediately began to aoqpse him as the author and instigator of the damaging report against his lather, and before Mr. Thaxton could explain himself, Arthur inflicted several severe blows upon him. At this juncture. Rev. Atkinson rushed from the church up to Mr. Thaxton, in a m »st excited and boisterous manner and was i about to join bis sou in the assault upon 1 Mr. Thux'on, when friends mterposed. Warrants were issued against preacher and son, charging them with the offense of disturbing religious worship, and I another against tbe son tor an assult and b iUot v. The preacher and ui» son announced ready when the oaaea were on I led, and they went into a committal trial for the offense of disturbing religious worship.
