The Standardgives the following particulars:11 Probably not the first case of blackmail which has occurred in town, but proving unsuccessful,' has brought 3 the guilty parties to account. A a short time since, two young men from Clearspring township, James B. Hart, and Philip Deeters, while driving home from town noticed their buggy whip had been exchanged in some mysterious manner with a newer and I better one. Whoso it was, and how it they came to have it in their buggy, a they had no means to ascertain. But the whole scheme became apparent to them shortly afterwards, upon re-,0 ceiving a letter from one who signed h his name as ‘‘John Stockdale,” accusing them of stewing his whip, and giving them the alternative of re-[. mitting $5 for the whip, or being )r prosecuted. The young men came to y town and presented the letter and the o facts of the case to a friend who took immediate steps for the arrest of the n | blackmailfrs. A postal order for the required amount was placed in the postoffice, addressed to Stock -dale, with the understanding that it was to be delivered to no other person without written order. 18 j A few days after Lucius Vedder called at the office and asked for Stock-* 1- dale’s mail. Upon being informed a- that an order was necessary from that individual, he left, saying he would get it. He returned last Sat-ke urday with the order, and receiving )W the letter, extracted the postal order a_ and presented it at the desk for pay-d ment, but was again required to procure his order from Stockdale for the paynent. Lucius was not to be daunted, and soon returned with a chum, Joseph Norris, and the order. The money was paid, and the two sharpers were at once placed under arrest and taken bofore Justice Bingham, and placed under bonds to appear for preliminary examination on Monday. Norrife’ bond was accepted, and Vedder went to jail in default. On Monday they were examined and the facts as stated were developed in detail. Sufficient evidence was produced to justify prose* cution, and the prisoners were placed under $500 bonds to appear Wednesday for trial. Norris was bailed ont by his friends, but Vedder was again remanded to jail,i ly buihisThthsanlt;daihaiweamnort»rsut»e-)Wdohe,ryairenireiyallW-cs,ay,ers
