Carey Also Arrested.La Cbosse, Wifl., Ang. 13.—Detective Byrne, of the city police force, arrested Frank Carey here yesterday. The prisoner is charged by Irwin Fowler with being an accomplice in the atrocious wholesale murder of the Drake family near Viola about two years ago. Soon after the crime was committed a Pinkerton detective from Chicago was given the case to work up, and he arrested a man named Grandstaff as ono of the murderers. It is said that Grandstaff made a sort of confession which implicated one or two others besides himself. He was taken from the jail by a mob and ivnched. Carey denies having had any hand in the matter and claims he was at Minneapolis the night the crime was committed, He was taken to Viroqua thismorning for examination.VjRool-a, Wis., Aug. 34.—Fowler and Carey, charged with complicity in the Drake murder, were arraigned before Justice Jtoherts this morningj and on motion of District Attorney Smith their preliminary hearing was postponed till the '24th. Neither has employed coun-pei. Fowler, oti rigid examination by the district attorney and sheriff1 last night, stuck lo his former story that he was working at Welch's, netir this city, at the time of the murder, and was there that night. The Welches deny this,.but there is a. difference in their stories which may he beneficial to Fowler in court. Carey was seen and Questioned. He displays a letter which ne says he wrrote to hie wife at Kiebland Center from Minneapolis on tno day the Drakes were murdered.
