A Colored Man Roughly Handled bya Mob.Several months ago the residents of Adamslowu and vicinity were greatly incensed over a threat said to have been made against two respected ladies of that locality by affiolored man named Clarence Nelson, employed at the time at Mr. John White's, a well-known farmer. A party of _about twent)-(ive men visted the residence of Mr. John White arid demanded of Nelson that lie leave the neighborhood immediately and made threats or lynching if he did’nt. Nelson went across the river but after a week's absence returned. Public feeling was still against him and reached its highest point Sunday, when a crowd of men boarded the camp meeting tram 1 near Tuscarora and treated Nelson j t rather roughly. He arrived in town ; ( on Monday and proceeded to M.tgis- j £ Irate Bcsant’s office where the State’s ’ i Attorney took him hand.In Tiie News office Nelson presented a very deiapiduted appearance. His coat was iu strips and tied around . his shoulders and his pants simply ; hung to his person by the lining ITe was bareheaded and his arm was in a ! sling. Appended is the story he told . ,‘'I was on the camp ground and about an hour before the train came Abe Bover’s wife’s mother and another woman told rue iliev were going to , make a raid on mo at Adamsiown a.-the train went back. I got on the train intending to leave it at Point of Rocks. At Tuscarora they made a raid on me and i ran into the water closet The crowd came there and Ed. Nichols grabbed for me but I jumped out of the window and they shot at me. After I landed I went to the bushes and crawled through. The{ ytrain stopped and let the crowd off. They shot into the bushe= but I wasn't hurt. 1 got to Dick Harris' and about dusk they came in and dragged me out and took me apiece away. Tfioy, quarreled whether thov should shoot or hang me. Ed. They thought I was dead and s;vd • “that’s got-him.” Then Bob Ailnutt kicked me and shot me in the arm. After that I crawled through the bushc5 a got awuv. I reached John ' Stevenson’s and called for a cool drink of water and they told me I better get awav. 1 left and on the load met Bnb Stevenson and Calhe Brooks and they to.d me to take to the fields.
