A Bogus Marriage and Seduction.Ann Chaney, a respectable servunt girl, about eighteen years old, living in the fam* ily of James Newman a short distance south of Mt. Meridian, was made the victim of an atrocious outrage on Sunday the 10th inst. It seems that one James McCammack, who liyes in the same neighborhood, had been paying the girl some attention for a year past, and on Sunday took her to church in a buggy. On the road home, he proposed marriage to her, and she accepted. Herepresented to her that bis family wonld oppose the match if they found it out, and suggested that they should get married immediately, and thus avoid that difficulty. To this she also consented, and they drove to Greencastle to procure a license. On arriving here he left her at wbat she supposed to be a hotel, and went out, remaining sometime, when he returned with a paper which he represented to be a license, and accompanied by William Chadd, whom he introduced as a Justice of the Peace, saying that he would perform the marriage cere-emony for them. AH three then got in the buggy and started toward home. When about one mile east of the city, McCammack gave Chadd the paper. The latter on receiving it requested them to join hands, which thqy did. He then went through a ceremony, and pronounced them lawfully married, the girl thinking the whole thingwas done in good faith. Chadd then left themand they proceeded homeward. Shortly after dark they reached a point in the road adjoining the farm of R M. Hazelefct, in Marion township, five miles from town, where they stopped and passed the greater part of the night, although she at first objected to doing so. This part of the girl’s story is unfit for publication. Early the next morning they arrived at Newman’s, where McCammack left her, first informing her that the marriage ceremony was a sham, and proposing that they should continue their illicit relations. To this she objected, and had him arrested and tried for seduction before Justice M. B. Scott on Wednesday, who recognized him to appear before the Circuit Court in the sum of $500. We understand that a warrant was issued for the arrest of Chadd, but be fled and could not be found, There is also a rumor that the girl has since been abducted and carried off, but we do not know how much truth there is in it.The affair has awakened great indignation in that community, but the people seem afraid to resort to vigorous measures, because both McCammack and Chadd are regarded as desperadoes who would not hesitate to revenge themselves in any way on those who might be instrumental in their punishment. The former attended the picnic at Mt Meridian last Saturday, where he became inyolved in a difficulty with llcnry Allee, ending in a fight in which be was severely punished. It is stated that he threatens to shoot all who were engaged in his arrest This is a nice state of affairs, and the oitizesof that part of the county owe it to themselves not to allow it to continue much longer.cB Ctt6 e sfc£ eillt;
