Fird’s daughter began to cry when it became apparent her mother was going to prison. She was escorted out a rear door to escape the glare of television lights. The judge told Ford in his opinion the jury that convicted her of being an accessory to a felony arrived at the proper verdict. Judge Babcock said he wasn’t convinced Ford agreed to hide escaped murderer Michael Anselmo only because she was afraid for her safety and that of her daughter.Anselmo was serving a life sentence for the murder of a young woman in the Lake Tahoe area. He escaped from the Carson City facility Jan. 26 and showed up at Ford’s doorstep in Las Vegas five days later.Authorities said Ford and Anselmo had known each other for several years and communicated by mail whileAnselmo was in prison.Anselmo, 23, testified Ford freely admitted him into her home and even bought clothes for him and made his meals. He said he never threatened Ford with harm if she refused to shelter him.Ford told the jury, however, that Anselmo threatened her and her daughter if she refused to help him. She said although both she and her daughterwere frequently out of the home while Anselmo remained there, her fear of reprisal by Anselmo or one of his friends prevented her from going to the police.Testimony showed that while Anselmo was at the home, Ford continued to go to work and her daughter attended school regularly. On Feb. 8, the evidence showed, Ford and Anselmo got into a struggle that eventually ended with Anselmo’s capture. Ford said she awoke to find Anselmo with his hands around her(Please see SUSAN, Page 4)SHOWBOATBUFFETNOW OPEN!MONDAY • FRIDAY******Lunch 11 to 3:30 Dinner 4:30 to 11 p.m. WEEKENDS
