Austin Roof and two others that they were guilty of the crime of which they are charged, and at the same time implicated other members of the family and Barfield.Cook and Wheeler were arrested Sunday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff H. ~C. Oswald on the strength of a sworn statement made by JamesBarfield, Sr., who is also held in connection with the killing on testimony given at the coroner's in-cjuest Saturday, and at first the two men denied any knowledge of the murder In their confessions today they claimed that Barfield and Mrs. Cook, wife of the dead man, had planned the killing, and had first tried to kill Cook by poisoning, and after this method failed young Cook and Wheeler were induced to commit the deed on the promise that they would be protected from the law, and would receive as a reward for the crime certain chickens and a cow belonging to Barfield. In their confessions they claim that Wheeler held one arm, Mrs. Cook the other, the young girl held the aged man’s feet and that Ira Cook did the cutting. That after Cook lied the razor was placed in the dead man’s handindicate suicide.Beth of the men say that Barfield was absent at the time of the killing but came up a short time afterwards.
