A Strang* Story.— The Chicago Times of last Monday contains thefollowing dispatch from Waupun, purporting to be a confession made by Charles W. Chase, who is serving out a life sentence for the murder of Frank Goodhue, of this city. No such murder as the one spoken of in the confession was ever committed in this county, but may have been in some of the adjoining counties. Weare inclined to believe that the story was concocted by Chase, merely to get his name into the papers again:In December, 1874, Dan O’MW was shot, while sitting in his own house, at Chippewa halls, by some unknown assassin, and' dangerously wounded. The shot was fired from without, through the window, and the would-be assassin fled. On thefollowing July William Campbell, a neighbor of O’Mara’s, was arrested for the shooting, and being tried for the crime the following December, was convicted and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. He has nearly served out his sentence, which will expire Oct. 11, of the presentyear. On December 13, 1878, Frankue, of Chippewa, was murder-W. Chase was charged aana cIIIconvicted of the crime, ana came here for life on Jan. 1, 1879. During this week, Chase has confessed to Deputy Warden Alex. White that he committed the crime for which Campbell is serving a sentence here, and that Campbell is an innocent man. Chase says he was hired to shoot O’Mara by Mike Kelly, anotherneighbor of Campbell’s, and that Kelly agreed to give him $200 for the Job. That he paid him $30r and has faded to pay him. the rest, and that and his desire to help Campbell clear his character have prompted him to his confession. Chase says he can prove what he says by a man who he tried to get to “ go snooks” with him in the Job, and by another man who heard him ask Kelly for the rest of the money. His story is not credited by the prison officials, who think he is only figuring for a chance to get outside the walls, when he will do his best to get away On the Contrary, Chase says lie would not go out as a witness unless he was furnished withample protection. It is needless to say that Campbell is “like a fish out of water” in his anxiety for the time to come when he can go outside and investigate, and says it the story of Chase proves true he shall bring action against the State for $.3,000 diiiuartgr-^.......
