Fire Chief First to Report FireFire Chief Joe Munger, on a busman’s holiday, nipped in the bud what could have heen a severe property-damaging blaze Sunday afternoon when he happened to glance out the window of his residence at 931 Eighth. The chief saw smoke pouring from a garage at the rear of the Jack Spurzem residence, 920 Fast Sixth, and did what any citizen would do—he called the fire department and raced to the scene on foot. At least three other calls on the blaze were received at the station within moments of the chief's call. Two fire trucks answered the call at 2:12 p. m. and found the garage enveloped in flames. Chief Munger. in an attempt to contain the blaze, kept the garage doors closed until firemen arrived.By the time the trucks got to the scene, the flames were threatening the garage next door, owned by Roscoe Buzzard. 918 East Sixth. Firemen discovered that a car was parked in the Buzzard garage when they smashed a window, and with flames already attacking the roof and walls of the building, had to drag away a locked auto which was blocking the garage driveway before they could break the lock on the door and remove the vehicle in the garage. Before the door could be opened, heat had cracked the w indshield and caused some paint damage to the car in the garage, a state-owned auto.
