Reuben Drake’s Murderer®.Vikoqua, Wifi., Aug. 12.—Irwin Fowler, whose confession to being one of the murderers of old Reuben Drake, liis wife and two grand-children, near Viola, in 18S3, was reported in the Wisconsin several weeks ago, is in jail here awaiting a hearing. Frank Carv and James riouker, who were, according to Fowler’s confession, also implicated in the crime, will also be arrested when Sheriff Pollard locales them.Sheriff Pollard, of Vernon County, arrested Fowler about 12 o’clock lost night, at a farmhouse some eight in lies north of Yuba, in Richland County, where be was working as a harvest hand, and brought him here to-day for safe-keeping. After the first report of the concession came another re-[jort said that Fowler was drunk when io made it, but Charley Smith, of Viola, went before a notary public on July 28 and made afiidavit that Fowler confidentially told him come time in 3iay last that he, Cary, Honker and a woman, assisted Audrew Grandstaff, who was Ivnohed for the murder at Viroqua, The affidavit*was placed in the hands of James Dupee, father of the murdered children, and the district attorney of Vernon County ordered Fowler’s arrest, which was made ae above stated. Wraith says Fowler was perfectly sober when he related the story, which was told in a store seven miles from Viola, which was brought abruptly to a close by the entrance of a third party.IrVin Fowler is. a grandson of John Fowler, of Richland Center, is 22 years old, and a man of medium size. He has no home, bat drift® about from place to place, working as a general laborer. lie took hie arrest very coolly, and claims he had nothing whatever to do witfc the murder of the Drakes. He says be can prove his whereabouts on the night of the murder.As far as known there is no evidence against Fowler except the alleged con-iession said to have been made to young Smith, and the fact that he named two or three different places where he remained during the night of the murder. Fowler will be put through a rigid examination by DiBtrict Attorney Smith. If he gives up anything other arrests will follow.
