State drops chargesagainst fraternity trioCharges against three Kappa Sigma fraternity members accused of raping an 18-year-old University coed were dismissed Monday after a district attorney’s investigation revealed there was no evidence of rape.“It was a sad. unpleasant, demeaning experience, but it was just not a rape case.” said Assistant District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg.Municipal Court Judge Steve Russell dismissed the charges late Monday afternoon against Paul J. Longley, Robert E White and Kenneth C. Braud, accused of raping a University freshman from Dallas July 5.The complainant told police she received a call about 9 p.m. the night the incident occurred from a man whoidentified himself as a person she met the night before at The Keg, a local discotheque. At 10 p.m., a man arrived and told the woman her date was finishing a school paper and would meet her at the party later, she told police. She said the man drove her to the fraternity house, 2410 San Gabriel St., where three men she did not know were sitting near the pool. The men allegedly threw the woman into the pool twice before disrobing her, taking her into a corner bedroom and repeatedly raping her, police said. When asked to comment on the dismissal of the charges, Longley said, “I was innocent from the beginning — that’s all I have to say.”
