Sterling motorcycle policeman. hay brought to a climax many things the public ought to consider. No one knows or at least no one has made public any reason for the shoot Ins of Officer Card. No one knows whether the killers were bootleggers. bank robbers. nr possibly belong to a car.g who killed Hn Iowan near Cedar Rapids a few days ago. The killers may have been members of a gang whom the officer recognized nnd towhom he gave chase. They may nave been personal enemies of the officer. may have been killrd because he knew too much. No matter what the cause the law-enforcing officers of Whiteside county nnd of Sterling will not be doing their duty unless they capture these murderers.This brings us to a fact which cannot be demeti. that probably ninety per cent, of the people of Sterling are law-abiding citizens. They may drive a little too fast, they may transgress mildly here and there, but as a role they believe in observing the laws nnd to a remarkable extent do observe the laws. There sre only a few lawless characters in this community—individuals who make a business and make a living by violating the law. It is safe to say that ninety per cent of the people desire the laws enforced, want good government and know that if favoritism is shown to the law breakers it undermines public sentiment, and makes efficient government impassible.It Is a safe statement to make that the overwhelming sentiment of Whiteside county t' in favor of the prohibition law* and of its enforcement- It is a safe statement to make that the overwhelming sentiment of the people In Sterling and Rock Falls is in favor of the prohibition law and its enforcement.
