BEE DOTSON MEETS TRAGIC I HID^ATH IN GUN FIGHTAnother member of the^Dotson family was killed in a gun fight-last Saturday morning about 4:00 o'clock at Fort Gibson, in which two officers engaged three supposed desperadoes and shot it out.The latest member of this well known Sequoyah county family to meet a tragic death is Bee Dotson who has for months been on the scout with a heavy reward standing for ins capture, by the Arkansas State Bankers association. He was but 22 yearsof age but was known far and wide as being fearless and courageous andpossessing a daring spirit which led him through many an escapade without a scratch.'The final chapter in his life was written last Saturday night, August eighth. He, together with two companion^ believed to be liussell King c?i;d a chap called “Caifornia Slim, Move from their Oookson hill rendezvous to Hulbert in the midst of a hard downpour of rain. Town Marshal Tom Doolen of Hulbert suspected thatwd robbery of the King mercantile store at Hulbert would be attempted that night, because of the fact that within ffeoeht months the store had boenrobbed several times and each ithe midst of a heavy rain. He asked E. S. Watkins, deputy sheriff, to join him that night with the thought in mind that something would happen. After midnight ,a noise was heard in the rear of the store and the two of-opened fire. Watkins receiveda wound in the arm, but the robbers.hurried away without injuries, entered a car waiting at the foot of the hill and started toward Muskogee. Watkins ind Doolen started in pursuit, and six• • i . •miles west of Hulbert stopped at the home of Frank Redman of Ray and got him out of bed. Hd hurriedly donned his shirt and trousers and did not• i«iwait to put on hat or shoes and The chase continued. When nearing Muskogee, after passing through Qkay on the north side of the river, the robbery turned east to .Fort Gibson and whei they reached that town were stopped at the railroad crossing by the Rainbow special fast train which had left Sallisaw at 2:37 a. m. Officers Redman and Watkins | T1jumped out, the former carrying aIofhigh powered Winchester and the latter an automatic pistol. Commands* /were given for the bandits to surrender and the answer was a hail of bullets. The officers opened fire and two bullets from Redman’s gun killed Dotson as he sat at the wheel of the ear. One shot entered his right eye and the other passed through his heart, -killing his instanty. The bullet which penetrated his heart also bored thru an Arkansas road ma!p carried in his; jumper pocket, and struck a watch also carried ip that pocket. The watch deflected the bullet slightly and it passed through his heart at an angle. The other two men left their leader, ran west one block, south one mile and headed for the Cookson hill country whose every path and trail is probably known to them. His father, Berry Dotson, moved to Ramona, Oklahoma, several years ago and was killed there a little more than two years ago by John Nicholson, ex-town marshal in a gun figh^ Mack Dotson, a first cousin of Bee’s was killed about eighteen months ...ago on -the streets of- Marble - City following a fight with one of the Kirk brothers. Abe Dotson, farmer, living five miles wfest and north of Marble City and an uncle of Bee’s, was killed about five weeks ago near his home by Henry Edwards following an altercation in which Edwards claims that Dotson hail attacked him with a butcher knife, b Charlie Dotson, 25 years old, am! brother of Bee, is now serving a 25 year sentence at the McAlester peqi- j c; tentiary on a hi-jacking charge.
