this there is an attitude of resentment on the part of the good citizens of the Flap Top section of Mercer and Raleigh counties. \Dwelling on this angle of the sit-! j nation Sheriff Elliott, of Mercercounty, issued the following letter:“As there have been so many sensational reports relative to an imag-I inarv band of outlaws who arej *supposed to roam the Flot Top mountains, I want to give the facts| in the matter as we have found them after a thorough investigation.“1 and a number of deputies went'V v- - ‘C .*?~to the home of Kenna Abshire thefather of the girl who was report-.led to have been kidnaped, and also ! made a thorough search of the com-1 munitv i nwhich it was this imaginary band of outlaws had their headquarters. We found, by j talking to the best citizens living in the communities of Camp Creek J Mountain Creek, and Flat Top, that such a band has at no time existed and that this sensational report got started from the fact that Maitland Farley, alleged deserter, had been living in the home of Kenna Abshire for several months and after some -misunderstanding had occur-1 red between Abshire and youngi Farlev, Abshire drove him from hisli'y i )home, and the girl, in her seven-teen‘h vear, having been Farley’s sweetheart, left with him.“We wish to state positively that there exists no band of outlaws in; Mercer county. We can find no information or authentic reports of any place or time when more than three men have been seen together.“We make this statement in justice to the property owners and good citizens of the mountain section of the aforesaid counties because the peoole owning the land and living in that section are among the best people, generallv speaking, in the southern part of the state, and lt;it is very unjust to them to have an impression go out over country that the mountain section of these counties is an outlaw section, when there is no just cause for such a report.” i
