By NICK MARIANO Staff WriterLocal law enforcement agencies are investigating the possible homicide of a body discovered early this * moming in Carrier Mills.A witness discovered the body ofRalph Thompson Thursday moming at his residence on Smith Road.The body was found covered with a blanket outside his home behind his pickup truck. Another car is believed to be missing. The garage door was left open.Sheriff George Henley, of the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, said the death probably occurred sometime T uesday.On the scene were Coroner Wendell Lambert and crime technicians from the Illinois State Crime Scene.So far, no information has been released as to the cause of death, but Lambert did say the death was being treated as a homicide.Mm•* \'Wv. ■ •?*ON THE SCENE — Law enforcement officers inspect the scene on Smith Road in Carrier Mills where the body of Ralph Thompson was found. (Nick Mariano photo)By CURTIS WINSTON Staff WriterHarrisburg teachers intend to strike.That’s the decision reached in a vote Wednesdayevening by members of the Harrisburg Education Association.Negotiations with the Unit 3 adminstation have been “not too good,” said HEA President Jim Butler, late Wednesday night following the vote by the teachers’ union. He said HEA bargainers met with the board of education and a mediator Wednesday afternoon but the meeting yielded no agreement.“We don’t have a contract,” Butler said. “The teachers voted to not start school without a contract.”The first day of classes in Harrisburg schools isAug. 20.Butler said that the contract talks so far have made little progress. Salary is an issue that hasn’t come up yet, he said, as the language of the contract is still being hashed out.“We accepted their contract two years ago to end the strike,” Butler said. “Now they don’t like their language (in the current contract).”HEA’s notice of intent to strike will be filed with the school board and the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board, the agency that monitors teachers’ strikes. Through give and take, nearly all of the issues have been resolved and the board is hopeful that all items can be resolved,” the statement reads.“The negotiation process, however, became deadlocked on Aug. 6 when the board of education made a proposal covering all of the outstanding issues. The association, for whatever reason, refused to given any type ofproposal in response.“The parties did agree, however, to meet again onAug. 12.
