Horrible Cannibalism.A Oree Indian, whose name being translated signifii s the Swift Runner, has been arrested in C mada on the horriblecharge of having killed and eaten his whole family, consisting of his mother, brother, wife and five children, duringthe p st winter. The police took theprisoner to the scene of the alleged atrocity. and there found the bones of all thefamily but one. They showed that they h id been cooked, some by boiling and* others by roasting, thus establishing thechaige of cannibalism; hut :is to tip charge of murder, there is no other tlmn strong presumptive evidence of guiltThe police were unable to finn the remains of one of the victims, and the prisoner refused to say anything about it—acircumstance which is naturally construed to his disadvantage.^ The prisoner does not deny the accusation ofiiavine eaten the bodies, but saysthat his mother, brother and the children died of starvation, and that his wife,weary of the suffering she was enduring, shot nerself. The charge brought againsthim, on the other hand, is that he killed his whole family, dried their flesh and ate it at his leisure. When the police found the remains, lie put his fingers intothe eyeless sockets of a skull, and holding it up. coolly remarked. “ This was my wife.”The scene of the tragedy is only about seventy-five miles from a settlement. The Swift Itunner had a preliminary ex-: ami nation, when he confessed to having ! killed and eaten his wife and family, but : denied having so disposed of his mother and brother.
