Jay Sykes dead at 63MILWAUKEE (UPI) - His son described Jay Sykes as a “feisty crusader, a gadfly who enjoyed challenging conventional wisdom.”“He was a very outspoken guy,” said Charles Sykes after the death from a heart ailment Saturday of his father, 63.Sykes, a native of Philadelphia, came to Milwaukee in 1962 as a reporter and later as an editorial writer for the Milwaukee Sentinel.He left the Sentinel in 1967 to teach mass communications at University of Wisconsin-Milwau-kee, where he later became chairman of the department. In August 1980, he was named editor of the Green Bay News-Chronicle. He resigned the following May and returned to teaching.He served as state chairman of the Wisconsin Civil Liberties Union from 1968 to 1970 and as state director of Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968.
