ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. fUPD — Search plane*equipped with sophisticated tracking equipment including mfra-red cameras Saturday scoured a rugged mountainous section of Central New Mexico hoping to trace down a small boy’s radioed plea for help.Th# search for the boy, who has been crying for aid over citizens hand channels since Tuesday, got nlt;*w impetus early Saturday with a three hour contact with Albuquerque radio ooerators Alice King and Army Sgt. W. A. Schmidt. They narrowed th# boy’s location down to a 40 mile long areasouth of the city.“The contact this morning was definitely th* most mgnificant development since we started searching Tuesday,”Schmidt laid.Search coordinators, how ever, have not ruled out the, possibility that the distress calls might b* a hoax. They are equally concerned that the call! for help Tuesday may have been reaJ and that pranksters might now be taking advantageof it. I•SsKr-’‘We don’t know that someone hasn’t picked that up and now is leading us on a bit,” Civil Air Patrol search spokesman T.j C. Ashby said. “Rut of course we can't afford to let that stop in. He also said his father’s Dickun truck had been involved *in an accident and that his father was either dead or injured. jThe boy’s calls were first] heard Tuesday b\ a woman inl* wCalifornia. Since then reports of a crying child ha* been picked! up throughout the south andsouthwest. ITwo Air Force planes carry-! ing infra-red cameras were flown from Omaha, Neb., to photograph the area.
