Miami Indians To Split $5.2 MillionPERU—More than $5.2 million in checks will be mailed Aug. 15 to the Miami Indians in Indiana and Oklahoma , as their share of judgment awarded, by the Indian Claims Commission.Each Oklahoma Miami will receive shares .of $1,214.71 while Indiana Miamis will receive $1,237.48.To be eligible to share in the funds, a person had to be born before October 14,1968, and had to be a direct lineal descendant of an Indian listed on one of four tribal rolls compiled :in the 1888’s and 1890’s.Legal steps to obtain the money were first started in 1950 when a group of Miami Indians filed suit against the federal government, seeking additional payment for land in Indiana and Ohio that the Miami’s sold to the federal government iit 1818. Additional suits were filed in 1951 and 1953.The Indiana Claims Commission awarded the Indians $5,288,-236 in June of 1960. An act of Congress, authorizing the distribution of the funds was signed by President Johnson in October, 1966.
