Suspect’s bail cut to 60GsBy JEANNE BEDNARSKIActing Supreme Court Justice James Murray today granted an application to reduce bail for 22-year-old Howard F. Marnell who has been charged with second-degree murder in last week's stabbing death of his sister-in-law.Defense attorney Edward Men-kin requested that bail be set at $25,000, rather than the $100,000 figure set last week by Onondaga County Court Judge Patrick J. Cunningham.Although Murray agreed to lower the bail to $60,000, Menkin later said that amount was still significant” and that he would seek a further reduction from Cunningham next week.Marnell, of 5557 Imperial Lane, Clay, who is accused in the stabbing death of 20-year-old Sandra Olrich of LaFayette, did not appear in court this morning? Menkin said he specifically requested that his client not be brought to the court house because Marnell was “extremely distraught.”Bail “beyond reach”In appealing for a reduction in bail, Menkin noted Marnell is only 22 years old, he is a life resident of the county and he has no prior convictions.The attorney pointed out that MamelTs parents and two brothers were present in the courtroom today and that the “extremly high bail” set by Cunningham was “well beyond their reach.Chief Assistant District Attorney Norman A. Mordue argued that Marnell represents a “danger to society” and that bail should not be reduced.After the reduction was granted, Menkin said he would try to obtain a further lowering of the amount set, since $25,000 is “still significant” for Mamed's family to raise.Hearing canceledYesterday, Menkin and fedow defense attorney Maureen Perrin withdrew their request for a preliminary hearing before LaFayette Town Justice Malcolm Knapp. The circumstances surrounding the Aug. 5 stabbing death of Mrs. Olrich today remained unclear since details of a confession signed by Mar-ned did not become p ublic late yesterday after the hearing was canceled.Menkin characterized as “unfounded and incorrect” published reports yesterday that refection of a sexual advance by Mamed reportedly sparked the brutal stabbing death of the young town of LaFayette housewife.He said any such theory must be considered “speculation” at this time and he indicated the confession(Concluded on next page)
