Ban Three Jockeys After Suspected ‘Fixing’ of RacesHAMILTON' (JP) — The Ontario | racing commission cracked down Thursday on three more jockeys for the parts they played in the suspected fixing of horse races on Ontario tracks in June and July.Police stepped in again to arrest one of them—George Thompson of Hamilton — on a chargeof perjury after the commissionbarred him, Bobby Merchant of Montreal and Gordon Cox of Hamilton. from entering or riding on Ontario Hacks for life.T h o m p s o n was the second jockey arrested since the commission's probe got under wav about two weeks ago and came less than 24 hours after RobertWankmueiler of Newark. N. J.,was taken into custody followingtestimony before the commission.Wankmueller, said to be the payoff man among the eight riders now set down, has been charged with defrauding the public. Hewas remanded to August 15, when he appeared before a justice of peace Thursday. So far he has not been able to raise propertyor cash bail of $5,000.Of the eight jockeys suspended, six have been ruled off tracks in Ontario for life and two others have been set down indefinitely. Besides Thompson, Wankmueller, Merchant and Cox the others withlife suspensions are Phil Marches© of Pawtucket, R. I., and Bobby Keane of Toronto.Until Thursday’s action by the commission Thompson and Merchant had been suspended indefinitely along with Apprentice Rider John Bromhy of Toronto and Jockey Charles Bright of Muncie. Ind.The commission said further investigations are being carried out in the easfes involving Bromby md Bright.
