Emil Hoppe, assistant bookkeeper in the bank, answered the phone. The r.egro asked if the party on the Sine was the State Bank and upon being informed that it was said “this is W. F. Duncan and you will please pay to Henry Anderson, a negro working for me. five dollars and charge to my account. He will be there presently ”Soon after the conversation the negro appeared at the cashier's window in the bank am! inquired if Mr. Dun-•*an had 'phoned there to let him have five dollars. Mr. Hoppe informed him that he had and proceeded to give him the moneyThe trick worked so well Anderson could not be satisfied with only five dollars so on Monday he again goes to the telephone office and calls for the Thomdale State Bank. Upon being given connection he again tells Mr. Hoppe to pay to the same negro $12 and charge to the account of W. F. Duncan. Mr. Hoppe informed Mr. Duncan, as he supposed, the negro had gotten the five dollars on Saturday and was told that that was all right and to go ahead and let him have the twelve dollars. Soon after the conversation the negro again appeared at the cashier’s window and asked if Mr. Duncan had instructed them to let him have $12 and upon being informed that he had, drew the money and walked out. He went to the depot, bought a ticket to San Antonio and left on the 12’30 p. m. train. When Mr. Clement, the cashier, returned from lunch Mr. Hoppe told him about receiving the calls from Mr. Duncan. Mr. Clement became suspicious and called Mr Duncan over the phone to see if he had authorized the payments and was informed that he (Duncan) had given no such instructions. Investigations soon uncovered the scheme and officers in San Antonio were notified to “nab the said Henry Anderson and hold him until the arrival of officers from Milam county. The train on which Anderson wasriding was ditched out a short distance from the city and Anderson left the train and walked in by a different route while the officers were waiting at the depot, and he has not yet been located.Anderson was wise enough to select the noon hour to work his trick, knowing that Mr. Clement would not be at the bank.—Thomdale Thorn. In A In li n*VC
