A DASTARD’S DEEDKilted His Funner Sweetheart and Her Husband Through Jealousy While They PeaeeiuHy Slept.S nt to the Prison for Lite and Escaped After Serving butThree Years.Thirty-one years ago Tuesday K.G. H. Evans, a murderer, undergoing a lite sentence in the Indiana State Prison South, escaped mid has neverbeen recaptured. Eyans was received at the Pnson April 13, 1801, from Putnam County, and was at that time 20 years of age. If still alive he is now 54 years old, over one-half of which he has been a fugitive from justice. His crime was cold-blooded, and was committed irom pure jealousy, without cause.Turing the 34 Intervening years mints and facts have been forgotten to such an extent that but few persons can now be found who have any recollection ol the murder or the 03-cape ol Evans. Capt. S. B. Diffen-derfer, who was deputy warden during the exciting period lathe Prison's history, wnen the place contained many prisoners of war, probably knows more ol the circumstances than anyone now living in Southern fndiaua, and from him the story was learned.Evans and another young man, Tilghman Hanna, were going to see the same girl near a little town in Putnam County called Groveland, and a hot rivalry existec between the two for the hand ol the young lady, tor some reason Evans was not looked upon as favorably as hisrival, who successfully pressed hisrklrt fTt All Otr*liahle has ever been heard of him, but it is generally believed that he went South and joined the army. Whether he came out alive is notknown. The statement was made a short time ago that he had returned to Putnam County years ago, and wasliving there unmolested; but . thisproves to be untrue. At the time of Evaua’ escape rewards aggregating £1,000 were offered lor his capture, which have neyer been rescinded. Bo far as the records show he is the only life-time man who ever made a successful escape outside of Jerry Anderson, who Ik at the institution a few years since. There is one instancewhere a lifer went to Mexico and remained there until arrangements were made for his pardon, when he returned and was officially released.Noah Evans, a brother of Boh,who is an old man, is now serving a life sentence for murder committed inPutnam County. He was broughtto the Prison by ex-Rherifi Win. B. Vestal, Oct. 18, 1891,and at that time the fact that Bob Evans had »scaped 27 year* before was referred to, and a notation of Noah's arrival was made under the escaped man’s name. The crime of old Noah was almost as fiendish as that of Bob, while his trial was the most exciting ever held in Putnam County. It occupied ten cUys and the jury was out 18 hours, five of the jurors insisting on the lifepenally.Noah Evans killed Dick Adams in the streets of Koaehdale June 2,* rand in the presence of the wives ot both tnen. Early on the morning ol the day in question Evans and his wife, who lived in the country, drove te Koaehdale and stopped in front of Adams’ home at 7:30 o’clock. Evans got out of his buggy and calledAdams to the door, his wife following.
