The Hamman home is on east Poplar street in the northeastern section of the city and faces south. On the east is the roadway leading to S. N. Murphy's home, formerly known as Fairview Springs. Hart was coming down this lane when he saw Hamman slash himself. Sheriff Stambush and Chief of Police Vincent were on the scene shortly after the tragedy occurred and proceeded to investigate. The woman was found lying dead in a pool of blood, her head almost severed from her body. A cut on one of her hands was evidence that she had attempted to defend herself. The man was lying partly under a table and was groaning miserably. He was dragged forth and found to be in a desperate condition,a deep gash across his throat partially severing the windpipe. Dr. Wilson had been called and he took the man to St. Mary’s hospital, Evansville, for treatment. The patient was beyond mortal aid, however, and died at the hospital after a day of unconsciousness. So the immediate cause of the tragedy may never come to light.Coroner Kriekhaus arrived and had the body of Mrs. Hamman removed to Billups Werry’s undertaking establishment, where it was prepared for burial. The coroner endeavored to locate relatives of the deceased but without success. The body was interred beside that of her mother’s at Maple Grove cemetery Saturday afternoon.
