Inebriate Patients in Fight.•One of the fiercest battles that has ever been fought betwen the inebriate hospital guards and inmates at the state institution at Knoxville who were attempting to escape, occurred when Frank Cavenaugh of Mason City, lames Mabrier of Des Moines and John Holt of Lucas county armed themselves with hand axes and battled with the guards in a running fight which continued for three hours and over a scope o? country extending five or six miles. The men were workmen at the state brick plant maintained in connection, with the hospital. At a prearranged signal the three men grabbed the weapons and started southwagt through corn and wheatfield, followedclosely by Walt Greer and LorenzoBird, hospital guards. At a fence, where Mabrier. turned and flourished his hand axe, Bird managed to get in a knock-out blow on. the man’s neck, felling him. Cavenaugh and Holt continued on the bunt through fields and underbrush., with Green following close behind. In the meantime the supervisors and another guard started in a buggy around the road and finally succeeded in capturing Cavenaugit after a hard battle, in which the latter was badly beaten.Holt, the Lucas county man. Is still, at large with an axe and a big wrench; as weapons, and will doubtless put up. a hard fight when overtaken.
