Inebriate Patients in Fight.•One of the fiercest battles that has ever been fought betwen the inebriate hospital guards and inmates at the state institution at Knoxville who were attempting to escape, occurred when Frank Cavenaugh of Mason City, James Mabrier of Des Moines and John Holt of Lucas county armed themselves with hand axes and battled with the guards in a running fight which continued for three hours and over a scope o? country extending five or six miles.The men were workmen at the state brick plant maintained In connection, with the hospital. At a prearranged signal the three men grabbed the weapons and started southwest through corn and wheatfield, followedclosely by Walt Greer and LorenzoBird, hospital guards. At a fence, where Mabrier. turned and flourished his hand axe, Bird managed to get in a knock-out blow on. the man’s neck, felling him. Cavenaugh and Holt continued on the bunt through fields and underbrush, with Green following close behind. In the meantime the supervisors and another guard started in a buggy around the road and finally succeeded in capturing Cavenaugit after a hard battle, in which the latter was badly beaten.Holt, the Lucas county man. Is still, at large with an axe and a big wrench; as weapons, and will doubtless put up.a hard fight when overtaken.* • *Iowa Win* Rate Victory.The state of Iowa won a big vie*' I tory over the railroads in the series of decisions just handed down by the interstate commerce commission. The cases include a group that involve practically all the rates under which' traffic moves into and out of the state.The reasonableness of the rates between towns and cities In the interior and points east of the Indiana-Illinois line, the rates between interior Iowa and Chicago and Peoria and other rates are involved.The decisions were handed down by Commissioner Harlan and are adverse to the roads on the ground their rates are unreasonable and discriminatory. The effect of the decision is certain to be of importance to the commercial development of Iowa.m * *Bays Banks Owe $27,000.
