Tom Brewer Cleans Out a Newspaper Office.Springfieid, 111., Aug. 5. —Tom Brewer,the leader of the gambling fraternity ofthis city, made an assault upon Dr. AaronGurney, the editor : of the Evening News, this afternoon, because that paper reported a quiet game of poker that had occurred a few evenings ago. The doctor received a severe gaRh on the side of the face, and over the eye and had his arm badly out in warding off a box of news plates which Brewer hurled at him. The attack was made in the composing room, as the forms were being locked up for the second edition of the paper, and the terrified printers fled from the place and left the old man to fight the battle alone. H. T. Slick, a reporter, rushed into the street lor the police, and was met at the door by Brewer’s brother John, who chased the pencil-shover several blocks. Brewer gave himself up to the authorities, and was fined $3.
