Tom Brewer Cleans Out a Newspaper Office.SmiNoriEJLD. 111., Aug. 5.—Tom Brewer,the leader of the gambling fraternity oftliia city, made an assault upon Dr. AaronGurney, the editor ' of the Erening Newt, this afternoon, because that paper reported a quiet game of poker that had occurred a few evening* ago. The doctor received a severe gash on the aide of the face, and over the eye and had hia arm badly cut in warding off a box of newti plates which Brewer hurled at him. The attack was made in the compoaing room, as the forme w*r* being locked up for the second edition of the paper, and the terrified printers fled from the place and left the old man to fight the battle alone. H. T. Hlick* a reporter, rushed into the street lor the police, and was met at the door by Brewer’a brother John, who chased the pencil shover several blocks. Brewer gave himself up to the authorities, aud was fined $3.
