Hildreth Bros., Corona.Cal. Gentlemen: .Your favor of the 29th inst. just came to my bands this morning regarding the salary of the inspectors of street work. In reply thereto I have to say that there is no amendment in the Statutes of 1905, prohibiting the payment of inspectors fees, but fn making an assessment in a large job of city street pavine, I ran upon an amendment of Sec. 35, of the Vrooman Act. in the Statutes of 1903. pago 88, chapter LXXX, which allows the privilege of appointing inspectors only to cities having a population of 50,000. pr over. The construing this amendrhent, while it does not prohibit other cities directly. I take it that it does indirectly, and therefore I have not included the inspectors fees in the regular assessment. We have, not, bowever, abandoned any street work on this account, but are going right ahead aud the property owners of Long Beach are putting up inspectors fees themselves and they are not entered up in the assessment. Inasmuch as the property owners themselves are the main ones damaged by poor work, it would be a very short sighted property holder who would refuse to pay an extra dollar for the inspector's fee, though 1 would not risk making the assessment invalid by putting inspectors fees in the assessment.Hoping this will answer the iuquiry you make, I am,Yours truly,F. A. Knight. City Attorney.BADLY MAIMED:aUn.WJtb. Bcoken.Neck, Body Pierced With Ballets, Lex* Crushed, T^lks on Street Corner. With a broken neck, his head held in position by a miniature « steel derrick which disappears at the back of his coat collar, the appliance resembling a ball-catcher’s mask, Barney Baldwin recounted his life experience crowded with tragedy and horror, from a wagon on the street corner Tuesday evening. According to bis talk he is an ex-soldier of an Indiana regiment, having seen four years' service. He was shot four times through the body while in service. As the result of a railroad wreck, his neck-was broken and both legs were severed by the car wheels save the cords. The members were replaced, forty-six pieces of skin from the small of the back transplanted to the left member and the bone of a sheep grafted to the right. The injured members were exhibited to the audience, as well as were the bullet wounds in his chest and neck. He is sixty-seven years old.BIDTwo Men Knxaxed in Fixht Tuexday at Midnixkt Resort to.
