CHECK SHOWS ’NO BRUTALITY' TO PRISONERS36 Convicts Who Popped iLeg Bones Get No Sympathy In Georgia*REIDSVILLE. Ga. (.*—A joint j legislative committee has completed a two-day probe of prisoner mass mutilation at the RockQuarry State Prison in Buford with recommendations that strict discipline be maintained and that J guards stop cursing and cuffing jinmates. !*But the committee said in a unanimous report Friday that it had found nothing to substantiate “allegations of cruelty and brutality” at the prison branch for incorrigible convicts 40 miles northeast of Atlanta.The investigation was called ;jafter the legs of 36 convicts were \ smashed with 20-pound sledges I during a rest period Monday afternoon and 5 others were mutilated Tuesday.The prisoners were quoted at time as saying they broke their own legs in protest against brutality. hard treatment and cursing by the guards.Five were interviewed by the committee in the prison hospital ; Friday. Each swore he struck his j own legs with a 20-pound sledge i hammer.An eye-witness, however, said Thursday in Buford during the | first day of the committee probe that he saw three men move down a line of 26 white men. who sat on the ground with two rocks eight inches apart under theirlogs, “popping” the** bones with hammers.
