FATHER ACCUSEDOF KILLING FOUR CHILDREN(B? Associftted Prf»iCOLUMBUS. Ky.. Aug 4.—Accused by his wife of slashing their four children to death with a butcher knife and stabbing her. W. J. Morse, 45, was rushed away from a crowd of threatening neighbors late last night, it was learned today.The wife, Mrs. Jane Morse. 42, was stabbed in the back five times and a physician who examined her today said she might not live. The tragedy occurred at the Morse home near this little Mississippi river town, once surveyed by order of President Thomas Jefferson as a possible site for the capital of the United States before Washington was selected.Mrs. Morse said her husband became enraged in an argument when she remonstrated with him,as she said she had frequentlydone, over his treatment of the children. She said Morse grabbed the knife, ran to a bed and slashed the throats of their son, JamesTheodore, 5, and their daughters. Inez. 3 .and Margaret Elizabeth. 1. She said he next plunged the blade ipto the back of the oldest child. Billy Lee. 3, five times. The chiid ran from the house and was found dead later about 100 yards away.Town Marshal Charles Bui ton was summoned bv neighbors who heard Mrs, Morse's screams. He arrested Morse on a highway four miles from here and took him to jail at the county seat. Clinton. A crowd gathered and the man was hastilv sent to another iail which officers kept secret.Mrs. Morse said she the road after husband, help, but that when lieed her she went hackthe porch barely conscious until neighbors arrived.Neighbors said Morse, a WorldWar veteran, was regarded as a man of extremely high temper.
