State high court rejects man’s appeal in Greenfield torture caseAssociated PressBOSTON - The state’s highest court has rejected an appeal by a man who was convicted of kidnapping and then spending months torturing a mildly retarded man in Greenfield to death.In turning down the appeal, the Supreme Judicial Court upheld the conviction of Frederick H. terry for kidnapping and first-degree murder in 1995 of 22-year-old Billy Paige.terry and Clinton Maynard, his cousin, are both serving life sentences for their role in imprisoning Paige in a rented home, beating, burning and giving him electrical shocks for months, and then burying him in a Fitzwilliam, N.H., quarry when he died.“We conclude that there is no reason in law and justice for ordering entry of a lesser degree of guilt ... or a new trial, the Supreme Judicial Court ruled.TTie court ruled that terry willingly and knowingly confessed his part in the torture of teige, and that he had done so without ever requesting the presence of an attorney It ruled statements made by his mother, Lena terry, about his being in charge of Paige were property admitted as hearsay evidence.terry's brother, Richard terry, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is serving an 18-to-20 year sentence.
